About La Pointe

Where History, Nature, and Community Unite

For centuries, La Pointe has been a place of refuge, a natural harbour that provided shelter to seafaring explorers and fishermen as early as the 1500s. Once Chéticamp’s original harbour, this coastal haven was a bustling hub for the fishing industry, deeply woven into the region’s maritime traditions. Over time, as fishing operations shifted inland, this once-thriving settlement faded into history.

Today, La Pointe is experiencing a revival, embracing its past while shaping an exciting future. Entrepreneur Kirk Hoppner and longtime Chéticamp resident André Bourgeois have embarked on a mission to restore and reimagine this historic site, transforming it into a premier eco-luxury destination that honours its heritage while creating new experiences for travellers and locals alike.

A destination rooted in history & nature

The land itself remains a sanctuary for wildlife and natural beauty. Perched along the rugged southernmost tip of Chéticamp Island, La Pointe’s dramatic cliffs offer some of the best birding in North America. Every spring and fall, dozens of migratory seabird species arrive along this untouched coastline, making it a true birder’s paradise. Les Caps Nature Preserve, a protected 78-acre sanctuary, sits adjacent to La Pointe, offering visitors even more opportunities to explore and connect with the land.

From stunning ocean vistas and untouched wilderness to otherworldly sunsets, clear night skies for stargazing, and breathtaking marine life, La Pointe remains a place where nature takes centre stage. Watch whales, porpoises, and seals from the shore or witness local fishing boats harvesting lobster and snow crab throughout the summer, continuing traditions that date back centuries.

The vision for La Pointe

As La Pointe steps into its next chapter, it will offer visitors a one-of-a-kind experience that blends history, sustainability, and modern comforts. Carefully designed to preserve the land’s natural beauty, the development will include:

  • La Pointe Chalets – Thoughtfully designed chalets nestled into the landscape, offering a peaceful retreat with stunning oceanfront views.
  • Le Shed at La Pointe – The heart of the experience, home to Bistro Fiset, La Pointe Museum, a retail boutique, and a multifunctional gathering space.
  • Bistro Fiset – A modern bistro featuring locally sourced cuisine, handcrafted drinks, and a welcoming space for visitors to gather and unwind.
  • La Pointe Museum – A cultural hub showcasing Acadian history through artifacts, exhibits, and storytelling, preserving the legacy of Chéticamp Island.
  • Marina & Beach Access – A revitalized harbour featuring docks for local and visiting boaters, along with kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding rentals.
  • Nature Trails & Wildlife Viewing – Scenic walking trails leading to migratory seabird hotspots, breathtaking cliffs, and panoramic ocean lookouts.

A place for everyone

La Pointe is more than just a destination—it’s a living, breathing connection to history, nature, and community. This project is designed not only for travellers but for the people of Chéticamp, ensuring that this special place continues to inspire, preserve, and thrive for generations to come.
